Medway Culture Club is proud to present The Music of Windrush, an exciting and immersive steel pan workshop for children aged 5–16. Taking place on Saturday 13th June at MidKent College between 10:30–13:30, this vibrant hands-on session will introduce young participants to the joyful sounds, rhythms and cultural heritage of steel pan music while exploring the inspiring Windrush story and the lasting impact Caribbean communities have had on British culture.
Delivered in partnership with Steel Pan Trust, a specialist arts charity Medway Culture Club has proudly collaborated with since 2021, the workshop gives children the opportunity to learn directly from experienced steel pan musicians and educators. Participants will discover how the steel pan became the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago, learn basic playing techniques, rhythms and melodies, and experience the excitement of performing together as part of a group ensemble. The session is designed to be inclusive, energetic and accessible for all abilities, whether children are trying steel pan for the first time or already enjoy music.

Alongside the practical music-making, the workshop will explore the history and origins of steel pan music and its connection to the Windrush generation. Through storytelling, discussion and live demonstration, children will learn how Caribbean migration helped shape communities across the UK and how music became a powerful expression of identity, celebration and togetherness. By connecting music with history, the workshop offers young people a meaningful way to engage with themes of culture, migration and diversity in an enjoyable and memorable environment.
Steel Pan Trust was founded in 2013 to promote the education and accessibility of Caribbean steel pan music through workshops, tuition, performances and community projects. Their work reaches thousands of people across the UK each year, helping audiences of all ages and backgrounds experience the positive impact of music and creativity. The charity’s “Pan Therapy” approach highlights the wellbeing benefits of music-making, encouraging confidence, self-expression and social connection through steel pan performance.
The workshop also reflects Medway Culture Club’s ongoing commitment to celebrating cultural diversity through creative arts experiences for young people. By combining live music, cultural education and hands-on participation, The Music of Windrush offers children a unique opportunity to build confidence, learn new skills and connect with an important chapter of British and Caribbean history.

Children attending the workshop will enjoy a fully interactive experience, including lunch, all instruments and materials provided, and the chance to perform together in a supportive and welcoming environment. The session encourages teamwork, listening skills and creativity while celebrating the uplifting spirit of Caribbean music and culture.
Parents & carers are invited back at 13:00 to enjoy a group performance by the young people and the Steel Pan Trust.
