The Art of Storytelling: Bag Design Workshop

Medway Culture Club is proud to present The Art of Storytelling, an exciting and creative bag painting workshop for children aged 5–16. Taking place on Saturday 11th July at MidKent College, this engaging hands-on session combines art, culture and creativity, giving young people the opportunity to explore the power of storytelling through the rich history of Black art and the work of influential Black British artists.

The workshop begins with an interactive introduction to Black art history, where children will discover how artists have used colour, symbolism and everyday objects to tell stories about identity, community and culture. Through discussion, visual examples and artist-led activities, participants will gain an understanding of how art can communicate ideas and experiences across generations.

Inspired by the work of Lubaina Himid, one of Britain's most celebrated contemporary artists and winner of the Turner Prize, children will explore how storytelling can be expressed through bold colours, patterns and unexpected surfaces. Himid is renowned for transforming ordinary objects into artworks that encourage audiences to think differently about history, identity and representation. Her vibrant and imaginative style will provide inspiration for the children's own creations.

Following the introductory session, participants will work alongside a professional artist to design and paint their own canvas bag. Using a variety of colours, shapes and creative techniques, each child will create a unique artwork that reflects their imagination and personal story. The workshop is designed to be inclusive and accessible for all abilities, whether children are experienced young artists or simply enjoy getting creative and trying something new.

Beyond developing artistic skills, the workshop encourages self-expression, confidence and critical thinking. Children will learn how artists can use creativity to explore important themes while gaining hands-on experience with painting techniques and design processes. The session also provides a valuable opportunity to engage with an important aspect of British cultural heritage in a fun, age-appropriate and inspiring environment.

As part of Medway Culture Club's commitment to celebrating cultural diversity through the arts, The Art of Storytelling offers a meaningful and memorable experience that combines creativity with learning. By connecting artistic practice with history and storytelling, the workshop helps young people develop a deeper appreciation of the many voices and experiences that contribute to contemporary British culture.

Children attending the workshop will enjoy a fully interactive experience with all art materials provided, expert guidance from a professional artist and the opportunity to take home their own personalised canvas bag. The session encourages creativity, imagination and cultural discovery while providing a welcoming space for children to learn, create and connect.
