The Magic of Medway: Creative Workshop with Award-Winning Designer Esther Johnson

There's something truly special about the place we call home, and at Medway Culture Club, we believe our young people deserve the chance to celebrate it in the most creative way possible. That's why we're thrilled to invite children to join us for 'The Magic of Medway' on Saturday 14th March. A hands-on workshop that combines local heritage, creativity, and inspiration in one unforgettable morning.

A Celebration of Medway, By Medway Children

The Magic of Medway is an interactive journey through everything that makes our region unique, led by local award-winning designer Esther Johnson. Known for her thoughtful approach to creativity and ability to nurture individual expression, Esther brings years of professional design experience to this special collaboration with Medway Culture Club.

Children will immerse themselves in games and puzzles inspired by our rich local history, explore the stories behind the Medway Activity Book, and design and create their very own Medway souvenir, a keepsake they'll treasure and imagine visitors purchasing as a proud symbol of our region.

What Makes This Workshop Special

Every child receives their own Medway Activity Book and enjoys a fascinating talk about how the book was created, offering a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the creative process. For older children, the workshop includes an inspiring discussion about the Prince's Trust and how such organisations support young people in developing ideas, building confidence, and creating opportunities for their futures.

The morning is carefully structured to keep children engaged throughout. After drop-off at 10:30, we'll begin with ice-breaker activities, then from 10:45 until 12:30, children will dive into Medway-themed games, create their souvenirs, enjoy storytelling, share the activity books, and participate in the inspiration talk. The session concludes with lunch at 12:30, with collection at 13:00.

Why Children Love Working with Esther Johnson

Esther's approach to teaching design is unique. Rather than imposing a rigid curriculum, she adapts to each participant's interests and abilities, encouraging exploration and celebrating individual creative voices. Her sessions inspire children to think differently about their surroundings and trust their own creative instincts, helping them discover talents they didn't know they had.
