Taking place at Woodlands Youth Centre in Gillingham, this 90-minute experience weaves together four powerful solo performances from local Black heritage artists, each exploring identity, belonging, and the universal search for home.

What makes Soul Food Solo Stories special?

First devised by Lyrici Arts in 2022, Soul Food was created to spotlight and nurture Black heritage voices in Medway. It quickly struck a chord with audiences, with past attendees describing it as “eye-opening, relevant, memory lane” and “a sense of oneness.”

This new chapter — Soul Food Solo Stories — builds on that foundation with four distinct performances. Each solo piece is deeply personal yet universally resonant, taking the audience on a journey that touches on family, heritage, aspiration, and resilience.

The Four Solo Stories

🌱 Roots and Heritage: A deeply moving exploration of family history and cultural identity, this performance invites audiences to reflect on the traditions that shape us and the stories passed down through generations.

💔 Loss and Healing: Through poignant storytelling, this solo piece explores bereavement and the strength found in community and memory, reminding us of the power of art to hold space for both grief and growth.

🔥 Voice and Empowerment: A bold and unapologetic call for self-expression, this performance tackles themes of race, visibility, and pride — offering both challenge and hope in equal measure.

Dreams and Belonging: Closing the evening, this story celebrates aspiration, the search for belonging, and the joy of carving out space in the world, leaving audiences uplifted and inspired.

More than theatre — a shared experience

What sets Soul Food apart is its atmosphere. This isn’t just a show you watch — it’s an evening you feel. Expect live performance, music, dance, truth, and moments of laughter woven seamlessly into an environment where community and culture thrive.

Whether you come to support local artists, connect with heritage stories, or simply experience something new and inspiring, you’ll leave with more than you arrived — as one past audience member put it: “Every story took me on a different journey.”
